The D O G O N

I heard a podcast many years ago on the Dogon Tribe & I have been interested ever since. The knowledge they have on the star constellations (not visible to the naked eye) has always fascinated me.

The Dogon are best known for their religious traditions, their mask dances, wooden sculpture, & their architecture.

The Dogon are believed to be of Egyptian decent & their astronomical lore goes back thousands of years to 3200 BC. According to their traditions, the star Sirius has a companion star which is invisible to the human eye.

The highly revered Dogon masks are worn to mark occasions throughout the year. The masks, according to the Dogon serve as a connection between heaven, which is the afterlife & earth. One of the most popular dance rituals is the “dama”.

I wanted to create a bright and colourful image celebrating this mysterious tribe & their traditions.
