There are people who attend events, and there are people who take the time to really understand what they are seeing.
That is why I was so pleased to read the recent article written by Raymond Smith for Inside Time following his visit to the private launch of the Neurodivergent Rehabilitation Art Exhibition in Spinningfields, Manchester.
Ray made the journey from London to Manchester to attend the launch, spending time speaking with attendees, viewing the artwork, and understanding the story behind the project. What stood out to me most when reading his article was that he didn’t just write about an exhibition – he recognised the purpose behind it.
The Neurodivergent Rehabilitation project was never about creating art for art’s sake. It was about creating a space where neurodivergent individuals within HMP Manchester could better understand themselves and communicate experiences that are so often misunderstood or overlooked. Through trust and honest conversation, participants were able to express things that can be incredibly difficult to put into words.
Ray’s article captures that in a way that I feel does justice to the people involved.
I would like to personally thank Ray for attending the launch and writing such a thoughtful piece. I would also like to thank Inside Time for helping share the story with a wider audience, particularly those connected to rehabilitation and the prison system.
The artwork may be what people first see, but the real story has always been the people behind it. The courage shown by the participants in sharing their experiences deserves recognition, and I hope this article helps more people understand why projects like this matter.
If you haven’t already read Ray’s article, I would encourage you to take a look:
Thank you again to Ray, Inside Time and everyone who has supported this project. Seeing these stories reach audiences beyond the prison walls is something I am incredibly proud of, and hopefully it helps continue important conversations about neurodivergence, rehabilitation and understanding.
If you get chance to see the exhibition, it is on show until 14th July, The Avenue, Spinningfields, Manchester
Ray’s contribution in Inside Time is so complimentary, supportive and filled with enthusiasm. He acknowledged the big picture, and that speaks volume and exudes professionalism.
